So, it’s been about 2 weeks since our political world got turned upside down. While many of us expected some degree of insanity, I feel pretty confident that we didn’t think it would be this bad. I would argue that we have seen the worst-case scenario play out thus far. It’s been exhausting, enraging, and anxiety-inducing, for sure. Many of us feel helpless, or are frantically dealing with the feeling that we need to do something. I get it. I do too.
But we have to remember that this is a marathon. As much as we hate to see what is happening, it’s going to continue, and unfortunately it’s going to get worst before (and if) it gets better.
I can tell you that I have felt an existential sense of dread since the 20th, with only occasional moments of levity. Thing is, I can’t maintain that level, so I have to look for the places where I can unplug, relax, and recharge. You should too.
The fact that you are here and reading this tells me that you probably think very much like I do. Also, there is a good chance that all of the horrible things that are unfolding don’t directly effect you. At least not yet. I am an empathetic person by nature, so I really feel for the people that are directly feeling the effects of this administration, but for my own mental health I need to set boundaries as to my emotional involvement.
So try to take a day, afternoon, hour, whatever to unplug. Turn off your phone, tv, and any other news source and do something that you love to do. Take time for yourself. Call your family. Hug your partner or your kids (or both!). Don’t let world events take the simple joy out of your life. That’s what they want. You are showing resistance by living your truth and your life.
The craziness will still be here. I will still be writing. You don’t have to participate 24/7.
Take care and love yourself.
Peace!
