Ever since the election I have felt, well, sad. Sad that my country could elect such a man as Trump. Sad that the gains we have made towards equality over the years would be swept away. Sad that we were going to return to a national mindset where people just act like assholes to each other, because that’s the way they see their leader act. I was also embarrassed.
Today’s meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Trump/Vance tag team combo removed any remaining traces of sadness or embarrassment. I am furious.
To see the representatives of “the greatest democracy on the planet” treat Zelenskyy as if he was some third world generalissimo was beyond the pale. Listening to Trump’s gangster threats and demands for gratitude in front of the world’s media made my stomach turn. And for JD Vance to sit there and lecture Zelenskyy as if he were a schoolboy… Let’s just say I admire Zelenskyy’s restraint, because I would have lost my shit on the little smug fucker.
Make no mistake, our leadership cemented our position today. Not only with regards to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but as to how we (the United States) are to be viewed on the world stage. That view is not a complimentary one. We are now no longer allied with Europe, and the strength of that alliance, which has provided the world with relative peace for eight decades while propelling the United States into the world’s sole superpower, is no more. NATO may still exist on paper, but in reality we have proven that we cannot be trusted as an ally.
These are dark times. Prepare accordingly.
